6 Knitted and Braided Fabrics
-

Abstract
The application areas of fabric are determined by the fabric structure and raw material used. The main categories of fabrics are woven, knitted, braided, and nonwoven fabrics. Knitting is a fabric formation technique in which the yarn is bent into a loop and these loops are interconnected to form the fabric. Knitting can be defined as the interlooping of yarns. The bending of yarn provides better stretch ability, extensibility, comfort, and shape retention properties. However, they tend to be less durable than woven fabrics. Braiding is the fabric formation technique employing the intertwisting or intertwining of yarns in a defined manner. Braiding is also a fabric engineering technique including diagonal interlacement of yarns; however, the angle of interlacement varies from 1° to 89°. Braiding finds wide applications from aesthetics to technical textiles.
