Was Paul a Jew Within Judaism? The Apostle to the Gentiles and His Communities in Their Historical Context

Abstract
Vor dem Hintergrund der in der neueren Paulusforschung entwickelten “Paul within Judaism”-Perspektive und in kritischer Betrachtung des “Parting(s) of the Ways”-Modells fragt der vorliegende Beitrag, wie der Platz des Paulus im Judentum seiner Zeit zu bestimmen ist. Es lässt sich erkennen, dass die von Paulus vorausgesetzte und von ihm selbst propagierte soziale Realität in den Gemeinschaften christusgläubiger Menschen deutlich komplexer war, als es ein Neben- oder gar Gegeneinander von ‘Juden’ und ‘Christen,’ deren “Wege sich getrennt” hätten, suggeriert. Paulus verlangt von Heiden, dass sie sich von Verhaltensweisen, die mit dem Glauben an den Gott Israels unvereinbar sind, fernhalten; Juden sollen dagegen ihre Bräuche den Heiden nicht aufzwingen. Gleichzeitig lässt sich erkennen, dass Paulus ein eigenes Selbstverständnis der an Jesus Christus Glaubenden gegenüber Juden und Heiden entwickelt (1 Kor 9,20-21). Der Platz des Paulus im Judentum ist deshalb je nach Perspektive unterschiedlich zu beschreiben.
