Abstract

There is an increase in the use of secondary or alternative fuels in cement plants worldwide. This can conserve fossil energy sources and raw materials and reduce CO2 emissions. Of particular importance are plastic waste, waste tyres, sewage sludge and meat and bone meal. It must be taken into account that considerable amounts of ash are introduced into the clinker with these fuels. The composition of these fuel ashes differs significantly from a raw meal or clinker composition. This influencing factor must already be taken into account in the composition of the raw meal for clinker production. In addition, water and other volatile elements can enter the kiln via secondary fuels. To ensure trouble-free kiln operation in the cement plant, the process technology must be adapted to the respective fuel mix. Even with optimal operational management, qualitative influences on the clinker or cement produced must be expected if secondary fuels are used.
