Abstract

In research literature, it is repeatedly assumed that the most crucial motifs on Gotland’s picture stones - the welcome of the horseman and the boat - are connected to Old Norse notions of the afterlife. This meaning of the pictures is often taken for granted, but occasionally also criticized. In fact, only a few indepth studies about this issue have been published, which usually only focus on certain stones, motifs, time periods or a certain pictorial stone type respectively. In the present paper, I will have a closer look at the possible connections to Old Norse eschatology, considering not only all relevant monuments and figurative details available but also new observations and recent finds. These include the previously unnoted motif of the birdshaped guide of souls as well as a higher being with horned headgear escorting the boat. The emerging result is that the afterlife journey constitutes the most dominant and pivotal motif in the iconography of the Gotland picture stones - from the Migration Period until the Christian Viking period.
