Abstract

The present paper initially outlines the various species of underworlds and concepts of the Beyond prevailing in NorseIcelandic sagas and Eddic poetry. It then sets out to a narratological analysis of the journeys to these phantastic realms as related in the texts. The main thesis put forward is that the underworld journeys (in particular those described in the adventurous mythicalheroic sagas) turn out as variations of a broader type of narration which is also the basis for narrating quests in Arthurian literature (riddarasogur) or travels to India in the romancestyle lygisogur. The images conveyed of the sundry types of underworlds are as diverse as the purposes and ways of conduct of the journey itself. The scope ranges from the mode of the Carnivalesque in the mundusinversusepisode in Torsteins saga bajarmagns to the phantasmactic horror of the Arinnefja tale in Egils saga einhenda. A different notion is detectable in underworld journeys portrayed in heroic epic where a trip ‘downwards’ - in a rather concrete sense - counts among the significant stages of a model heroic biography as is the case in the SigmundSinfjotli narrative from Volsunga saga (mind also Beowulf’s sojourn in the subaquatic lair).
