23 The Great Psalm of the Republic: Walt Whitman’s Democratic Poetics

Abstract

Proceeding from the assumption that “Democracy” is “the organizing concept that unites Whitman’s poetics, politics, and metaphysics” (Folsom 1998, 171), this chapter discusses Walt Whitman’s democratic poetics as a category that is central both to his theory of poetry and to his work itself. Transcending the limiting institutional definition of “democracy,” Whitman creates, in the words of political philosopher George Kateb, a veritable “culture of democracy” (1990, 545). The chapter first discusses the “Preface” of Whitman’s 1855 edition of Leaves of Grass as a manifesto outlining his democratic poetics and demonstrating the pervasiveness of democratic principles in all aspects of American authorship - especially in his relationship with his audience to whom he offers a partnership in co-creating his poetry. The final two sections of the essay then analyze several passages of Whitman’s poems, demonstrate the lyrical manifestation of this program, and conclude with a discussion of the nexus between Whitman’s democratic poetics and his global poetic vision and reception.
