22 “The Soul Selects Her Own Society”: Emily Dickinson’s Poetry and the Creation of the Self

Abstract
This chapter discusses Emily Dickinson’s poetic creation of an independent self. In her poetry, Dickinson explored and expanded the themes of Romanticism. Dickinson adapted the Emersonian ideal of self-reliance to her own situation. She ultimately rejected traditional social and religious values including faith in a divine creator, salvation, and eternal life. In her poetry, Dickinson replaced absolute and authoritarian certainties with a personal reality in which love and friendship are the embodiment of grace. For Dickinson, home is paradise, nature is sacred, and art is eternal.
