23. Sandra Cisneros, The House on Mango Street (1984)

  • Marc Priewe

Abstract

Sandra Cisneros is one of the most renowned Latina writers in the United States today. Since the turn of the millennium some of her poems, short stories, and novels have entered the canon of American literature and can now be found in various collections, anthologies, and literary histories. In 1984, Cisneros first received nation-wide and later global attention for the publication of her debut novel The House on Mango Street, which centers on the coming-of-age of a Latina protagonist in an ethnic neighborhood in Chicago marked by economic inequality and cultural hybridity. Cisneros’ novel combines the consciousness of a female adolescent with a literary aesthetic indebted to high modernism and postmodernism and thus presents a core example of the artistic expression of ethnic experiences and consciousness in the United States in the twentieth century.
