14. Djuna Barnes, Nightwood (1936)

  • MaryAnn Snyder-Körber

Abstract

This article offers a three-part introduction to Djuna Barnes’s seminal modernist prose work Nightwood (1936). First, the publicity dynamics behind Barnes’s very particular reputation as “the most famous unknown of the century” are outlined along with an overview of her eclectic writing output. A second section hones in on the novel’s strategies of visual-spatial composition and plot disruption. The third and final block of analysis sketches out tendencies in the reception of Nightwood.
