27. Jonathan Safran Foer, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2005)

  • Alexander Starre

Abstract

The article discusses the novel Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer in the context of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Foer’s novel pairs the first-person narrative of Oskar Schell, whose father died in the World Trade Center collapse, with letters written by his grandparents. Through several generations, the members of the Schell family share an excessive urge to write and document, while being unable to properly communicate with each other. The novel triggered a wealth of studies focused on trauma theory, with scholars debating whether Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close delivers a convincing and pedagogically useful depiction of traumatic experience. The transhistorical and transnational dimension of the plot, which interweaves contemporary conflicts with memories of World War II, have also received considerable attention. Finally, the article highlights the formal innovations of the text, especially concerning the multimodal design and the use of expressive typography.
