Abstract
Schools are important agents of socialization, education, and selection, and conversations play an important role here, for example, in the transfer of knowledge, in selection processes, but also in the constitution of boundaries between the school as an organization and its environment. In the Western tradition, conversations in schools, or rather, in teaching-learning contexts, have been studied and thought about for a long time, at least since Plato reflected on the correct form of conversation between teacher and student. Today, conversations in schools are being investigated from different perspectives and by different approaches. Presently, research interests are still focused mainly on classroom interaction, but multimodal studies offer new insights into the functioning of conversation in these contexts. However, the focus has broadened, and empirical research is increasingly concerned with conversations outside of the classroom, revealing how the “communicative household” of schools functions and how it is organized. The article first outlines the conceptual framework within which the further explanations are located, then outlines the tradition of instructional discourse research, and presents, thirdly, the main research approaches used to describe and analyze communication at schools. Finally, the paper concludes with a short overview of emerging research areas.
