11 Gesprächsrhetorik: Argumente, Argumentationen

Abstract

“While the type of argumentation theory which is philosophically inspired and motivated by normative interests suffers from a lack of empirical underpinning, conversation and discourse analysis has up to now generally lacked a conceptually precise investigation of the specifically argumentative characteristics of verbal interactions.” This observation of Deppermann’s still applies today. One crucial reason is certainly the fact that it has not been possible to establish a consensus concerning what is meant by argumentation; in particular, there is a lack of consensus regarding the way argumentation in language and conversations is organised. These aspects determine the structure of this article: the first step involves recourse to the rhetorical topical tradition as initiated by Aristotle, which is still dominant today, in order to establish what is meant by argumentation, or inferential discourse. This then takes us to the question of how arguments are organised through and by language. The final section investigates certain aspects of the presentation of arguments in conversations.
