Abstract

Classical rhetoric has developed a theory and practice of speech, it has failed, however, to do that also for conversation. Nevertheless, features and functions of conversation and dialogical implications of speech have always been an object of reflection in rhetoric. Both speech and conversation are basic symbolic forms of action of the zṓon politikon and the zṓon logon echon, i.e. the human being as a talking and community building animal. Successful enculturation and peaceful coexistence are based on this. - Systematic description of speech has been available since Aristotle, the rhetorical comprehension of conversation is a desideratum since Cicero. The following chapter will link the ethnomethodological tradition of conversation analysis since the second half of the 20th century to the question of its rhetorical implications, focusing on structures, functions, sequentiality, linguistic devices, not without considering the differentia specifica of the partes orationis and the partes dialogi. - The rhetoricity of conversation has been reflected both from a sociological perspective and from a rhetorical and linguistic viewpoint. Against this background, the chapter presents a structural synopsis of rhetorical, topical and ethnomethodological concepts of conversation, aiming at a closer cooperation of approaches to the analysis of the rhetoric of dialogue in various disciplines.
