9 Gesprächsformen in der Literatur

Abstract
While rhetoric, linguistic speech analysis and discourse studies are usually based on the investigation of natural, preferably authentic everyday conversations, in literary studies the interest in conversation is focused on the structures of the aesthetically formed fictitious dialogue in the medium of writing, drama, theatre, screenplay and video art. Apart from exceptions (such as the genre of conversation dramas), the term dialogue is preferred to that of conversation. But linguists have also expressed an interest in historically past forms of conversation that have not yet been technically recorded. They have therefore raised the question of whether and to what extent ‘historical analysis of conversation’ is theoretically possible at all; whether it is feasible to use written, even older, sources for this; whether literary dialogues could possibly also be regarded as evidence of earlier forms and rules of social interaction. Such questions are discussed in the first section of this chapter. In the second section, literary historical approaches to typologies of dialogue in literature will be presented, as they have been developed over the course of centuries. The third section shows how such forms have changed in literary history, illustrated by selected case studies, which are intended to show how literary authors have found very different solutions to the fictionalization (and sometimes ‘problematisation’) of social interaction in various literary genres on the basis of their respective experience of communication and against the background of their aesthetic programme.
