Abstract

„Dearth of available data“ - Scientific policy advice during the corona pandemic using the example of the Leopoldina’s Ad-hoc-statements. Based on a qualitative-hermeneutic text analysis of the Ad-hoc-statements on the coronavirus pandemic by the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina this article investigates scientific policy advisory and its handling of scientific knowledge and ignorance during the pandemic. Utilising the methodology of text linguistics, it exemplifies how dynamics of knowledge and expertise have an influence on the advice given in the texts, how established knowledge is used to temporarily bridge research desiderata and, conclusively, what the texts reveal regarding the self-perception of German policy advisory.
