Abstract

This article analyses four of Ulrich’s walks through Vienna in the The Man without Qualities and interprets them poetologically. The walks represent Ulrich’s progressive realization that he is not the hero of a realistic novel, that causality is replaced by contingency. Ulrich’s walks often end in the unforeseen. They thematize the fact that the modern world cannot be narrated with the means of the nineteenth-century novel.
