Abstract

This article is concerned with the writer’s block that Musil encountered in the late 1920s when working on The Man without Qualities. It assesses current understandings of the treatment for this that he received from the psychiatrist Hugo Lukács. The article then considers in detail Musil’s interest in Alfred Adler’s individual psychology and his engagement with the writings of Lukács, who followed this school of thought. Finally, the article shows how Musil reflected on his approach to writing in the late 1920s and how this reflection was informed by ideas from individual and gestalt psychology.
