Abstract: It would be misleading to treat the scholiastic corpora as fixed and unchangeable commentaries. A few examples are produced, drawn from the scholia to Aristophanes’ comedies and constituting a source of information on the plots of now lost Euripidean plays. In the scholiastic tradition concerning the plot of Euripides’ Stheneboea , the context of the commented passage may have insinuated an element of ambiguity. However, this cannot be considered as a general rule: another scholium, mentioning the plot of Euripides’ Palamedes , has suffered a corruption that causes ambiguity, but whose origin is independent of the connection between the commented and the quoted passage.

Abstract: A reappraisal is proposed of the meaning of Late Antique and early Byzantine attestations where the word σχόλιον is linked with participial forms like παρακείμενον (“extracted note”, “explanatory excerptum”), and of the verb παραγράφεσθαι as used in subscriptions of Greek Medieval manuscripts provided with scholia (“to be extracted / adduced / quoted”).

Abstract: This article reflects on the subscriptions which, in ms. Venezia, Bi- blioteca Nazionale Marciana, gr. 454 (coll. 822) of the Iliad , mention the ancient sources that were compiled in the apparatus of the scholia, concluding that they might actually not refer at all to the positioning of the exegetic annotations in the margins of the manuscript: hence, they prove not to be conclusive for dating the origins of scholiography.

Abstract: After a very summary survey of the Homeric manuscripts – including several provided with paraphrases – among which the Iliad ’s editors identified an “ h family” rich in ancient readings and the editors of scholia a family that conflates several known scholiastic traditions but contains good material as well, I will examine in some detail their interlinear scholia, checking their relationship with D -scholia and paraphrases.

Abstract: Even if no ancient commentaries on Aeschylus are preserved, there is evidence that they did exist: this is collected and discussed in the first part of this work. Particularly interesting is the possibility of a Late Antique hypomnema on PV still surviving in the Middle-Byzantine age: it could be the same as the hypomnema implied by some misplaced lemmas among the Medicean scholia on PV , probably the remaining traces of a wrong transcription.

Abstract: The aim of the contribution is to present the factual data about the main collections of scholia to the Greek mathematical treatises ( Elements , Almagest , the so-called “little astronomy”), along with an analysis of their types, function, and organization within the textual space of the ancient codex. On the basis of these factual data, an assessment is provided of the extent to which these collections may provide a clear-cut answer to the long-standing problem of the origins of the running commentaries that some medieval manuscripts present as sets of scholia.

Abstract: The commentary on the Corpus Dionysiacum composed by John of Scythopolis within 548 CE was expressly designed for the margins of the text. Cross-references by columns and sheets allow us to reconstruct John’s codex, a three columns type, with a sheet possibly like that of Callimachus’ P.Oxy . 20.2258.

Abstract: Starting from Montana’s definition of scholia as a planned and stratified compilation of marginal notes, this paper discusses the use of aliter and of similar expressions introducing new and different explanations in Latin scholiography, in particular in Tiberius Claudius Donatus’ commentary on Virgil’s Aeneid . Furthermore, some chains of notes in the Virgilian commentaries are taken into consideration, in order to check the several possible connections between these commentaries and single marginal annotations.
