Some features of the present position on theories of the chemical effects of nuclear transformation are briefly reviewed. It is suggested that theories based on the transfer of energy by elastic collisions of recoiling atoms are not adequate to explain many of the experimental observations. Instead it is shown that electronic excitation, the transfer of energy between electrons, and the consequent loss of valency bonding or its rearrangement, are likely to be of primary importance for explaining these effects.

Chemical reactions of hot atomic iodine formed by recoil from a photoneutron emission process, (γ, n) have been studied. The yield of the hot substitution, 126 I + CH 3 I → CH 3 126 I + I was determined. The probability of this process, compared to analogous reactions of hot hydrogen atoms, was found to be low. A possible reason for what appears to be a generally low efficiency of gas phase hot halogen atom substitution reactions is discussed.

Résumé Les transformations chimiques accompagnant l’émission β - de 131 Te ont été étudiées dans différentes conditions expérimentales; on a recherché particuliérement les états d’oxydation 131 I de après irradiation neutronique d’anhydride tellureux et d’acide tellurique cristallisés ou dissous dans divers milieux aqueux. Dans le cas de l’acide tellurique, les quantités relatives des états d’oxydation de 131 I, fraction réduite (I* - , I*O - , I* 2 ), iodates et périodates dépendent du milieu de dissolution, que l’acide soit irradié k l’état cristallisé ou en solution. Dans le premier cas, la fraction «réduite» croît de 12% a 89% lorsque l’on passe d’un milieu de dissolution voisin de la neutralité á un milieu acide (HNO 3 0,8 M). Dans le second cas, la fraction «réduite» est de 89% en Solution neutre ou acide et 64% dans KOH 0,5 M. Pour l’anhydride tellureux, en milieu alcalin, la valeur de la fraction «réduite » varie peu avec les conditions d’irradiation de TeO 2 (état solide ou dissous). En Solution, on observe seulement une légère augmentation (de 46% á 56%). Le milieu nitrique est, par contre, caractérisé par une très grande instabilité dont le résultat est une répartition variable des divers états d’oxydation de l’iode, suivant les conditions expérimentales d’analyse.

Zusammenfassung Im System Na 2 IrCl 6 · 6H 2 O konnten auf elektrophoretischem Wege zahlreiche individuelle Rückstoßverbindungen, die auf Grund des 191 Ir (n, γ ) 192 Ir-Kernprozesses entstehen, getrennt werden. Diese haben vornehmlich anionischen Charakter, doch werden auch zwei 192 Ir-markierte Kationen beobachtet. Es wurde das chemische Verhalten dieser mit wenigen Ausnahmen in trägerfreier Form vorliegenden Produkte während des Alterns in In HCl-Lösung und bei Reduktion des Ir lV zum Ir III studiert. Zum Verständnis des Hydrolysevorganges der 36 Cl und 192 Ir markierten Hexachlorokomplexe des 3- und 4wertigen Iridiums erwies sich die gleichzeitige Anwendung von aktivierungsanalytischen Methoden als sehr nützlich. Diese Kenntnisse ermöglichten es, die Natur der im Pherogramm auftretenden 192 Ir-Rückstoßverbindungen weitgehend zu klären. Der überwiegende Teil ist auf oktaedrische Komplexe des 3wertigen Iridiums mit wechselnden Anteilen an Cl - , H 2 O - und OH - -Liganden zurückzuführen. Von Bedeutung ist die Mitwirkung der 6 Kristallwassermoleküle, welche über Ionen und Radikale die Kombinations- und Stabilisierungs- Reaktionen beeinflussen und so auch die Entstehung von bisher zum Teil noch unbekannten Iridium- Komplexverbindungen verständlich machen.

The reactions of recoil 13 N atoms produced by the (n, 2n) reaction in sodium azide have been studied: labelled azide and nitrogen (N 2 ) are the principal products, with yields of about 30 and 65% respectively. The yield of azide shows little dependence on temperature. When samples of the irradiated salt are subjected to thermal decomposition, the specific activity of the nitrogen evolved first falls, then rises and shows a peak during the "induction period" for bulk decomposition. This behavior is interpreted in terms of displacement spike theory.

A nondestructive method for sodium-trace determination is described. 16 quartz samples widely distributed over the Swiss Alps have been investigated. The sodium contents have been measured after irradiation with 3,6 • 10 12 slow n/cm 2 , sec by γ-spectrometry. Concentrations of 0,15 to 24 ppm (i.e. sodium quantities of 0,03 to 5 μg in this case) have been found. The considerable spread of results demonstrates the different conditions of formation of the quartz crystals.

Zusammenfassung Mit dem vorgeschlagenen Verfahren können noch 10 -5 ppm Protactinium-231 in 10-g-Proben bestimmt werden. Nach Auslaugen der Probe mit Plußsäure-Perchlorsäure oder Flußsäure-Schwefelsäure und Abrauchen der Flußsäure wird das Protactinium durch Natronlauge an Oxidhydraten mitgefällt. Der Niederschlag wird in einer Mischung von 6 m Salzsäure und 0,5 bis 3 m Mußsäure gelöst; daraus werden Eisen, Niob und Tantal mit Diisobutylcarbinol ausgeschüttelt. Anschließend wird Fluorid durch Aluminiumionen komplex gebunden und Protactinium mit demselben Lösungsmittel extrahiert. Die γ- oder α -Zählrate des Extraktes gibt den Gehalt an Protactinium-231.

Two salts, tricaesium phosphotungstate and dicaesium hydrogen phosphotungstate, have been isolated and characterized. Methods for their preparation in the pure State are given. Similary, the trialkali and dialkali hydrogen phosphotungstates of rubidium, potassium, ammonium, sodium, and lithium have also been isolated and prepared in the pure state and a study made of some of their properties. Solubility data in water andnitric acid have been obtained at 20° C for Cs, Rh, K, NH 4 , and H phosphotungstates together with water solubility data for the sodium and lithium salts. The preparation and some properties of a number of relatively insoluble phosphotungstates namely, those of thallium(I), silver, mercury(I), and barium are described. Some organic phosphotungstates, the tetraphenyl arsonium salts, and a series of substituted amine and diamine salts have also been prepared.
