Christian Theology is devoted to reflection on religion, life and faith. What can be identified as the empirical dimension of theology? The empirical interest of theology and of research in religion since the 20th century refers in manifold ways to the focal issue “experience”. A contemporary life world oriented theology neither restricts its perspective to belief and faith traditions nor to “religious” objects. Rather it opens up towards an analysis of the culturally shaped forms and symbolic representations of life in order to describe religious experience as rooted in “lived experience” – a fundamental category for a refreshed understanding of human behavior. The formal object of Practical Theology as Empirical Theology is Christian praxis as action and as aesthetic praxis, centred in the first-person-perspective. The awareness of a human being interwoven with the active and re-active structure of life, with otherness, could serve as an understanding of reality in accordance with the dynamic and mysterious structure of life in theological interpretation inspired by the theology of Christ's cross. The contribution of Empirical Theology to theology in general might be to keep attentive and reflected contact with religious life in congregations and in the culture Christians are part of. Zusammenfassung Die christliche Theologie widmet sich der Reflektion von Religion, Leben und Glauben. Was kann dabei als die empirische Dimension von Theologie ausgemacht werden? Aus vielen Richtungen deutet das empirische Interesse von Theologie und Religionswissenschaft seit Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts auf die zentrale Frage nach der Erfahrung. Eine zeitgenössische lebensweltorientierte Theologie beschränkt ihre Perspektive weder auf Glaubenstraditionen noch auf “religiöse” Objekte. Vielmehr öffnet sie sich für eine Analyse der durch Kultur geprägten Formen und symbolischen Repräsentationen von Leben um religiöse Erfahrung als in „gelebter Erfahrung” verwurzelt zu beschreiben. „Gelebte Erfahrung“ dient dabei als fundamentale Kategorie für ein erneuertes Verstehen menschlichen Verhaltens. Der formale Gegenstand Praktischer Theologie als Empirischer Theologie ist christliche Praxis als Handlung und als ästhetische Praxis mit dem Schwerpunkt der Ich-Perspektive. Das Bewusstsein eines Menschen mit den aktiven und re-aktiven Strukturen des Lebens, mit Fremdheit verwoben zu sein, könnte als ein Verständnis von Realität dienen, welches im Einklang mit den dynamischen und geheimnisvollen Strukturen des Lebens in theologischer Interpretation, die durch die Theologie des Kreuzes inspiriert ist, steht. Der Beitrag der Empirischen Theologie für die Theologie als Ganzem kann es sein, den aufmerksamen und reflektierten Kontakt mit dem religiösen Leben in Gemeinden und der Kultur, deren Teil Christen sind, zu behalten.

This essay details recent research on practices of nurturing children into Christian faith in Black churches in the U.K. and U.S. The analysis focuses on the socio-cultural constructs that inform these practices and influence the communities' hermeneutical strategies, especially as they engage the Bible. I argue that Personal Construct Psychology (PCP) can enable educators and pastoral practitioners to discover how these communities construe meaning as they engage in the task of nurturing children into faith. It can also assist them in developing more holistic and democratic approaches to this missiological task. Zusammenfassung Dieser Aufsatz untersucht gegenwärtige Forschungsergebnisse zur christlich-religiösen Erziehung von Kindern in Kirchen der Schwarzen in den USA und Groß Britanniens. Die Analyse ist auf die sozio-kulturellen Konstrukte konzentriert, die diesen Erziehungs-vollzügen zu Grunde liegen und die hermeneutischen Verfahren der Gemeinden beeinflussen, insbesondere die Auseinandersetzung mit der Bibel. Es wird argumentiert, dass Persönliche Konstruktions-Psychologie (PKP) Erziehende und Mitarbeitende in der pastoralen Praxis dazu befähigen kann zu entdecken, wie diese Gemeinschaften Sinn konstruieren, wenn sie sich in der Aufgabe der Erziehung der Kinder zum Glauben engagieren. Es kann ihnen außerdem helfen, ganzheitliche und demokratische Elemente in dieser missionarischen Aufgabe zu entwickeln.

This essay seeks to make a case for a particular historical method of doing practical theology, and explores what such a method has to offer through the specific case of John Ruskin. It first develops the theme of Ruskin as a reader of texts – the aesthetic, the social and the scriptural – asking what different kinds of ‘reading’ may be involved, and probing the epistemological assumptions of the kind of ‘seeing’ he commends and believes he is engaged in. It then considers the implications both of the multidisciplinarity implied by his methods, and also of the role of the ‘amateur’ which is suggested. It then addresses the question of presentation; practical theologians need to consider how to present their theological reflection and interpretation in such a way that it effectively challenges public understanding and inspires public action, and here Ruskin can help us greatly. The essay concludes with some reflections on the hermeneutics of using a historical paradigm of this sort. Zusammenfassung Am Beispiel von John Ruskin wird in diesem Artikel der Versuch unternommen, eine spezifisch historische Methode für die Praktische Theologie fruchtbar zu machen. Zuerst wird das Thema ‚Ruskin als Leser von Texten‘ entfaltet – in ästhetischer, gesellschaftlicher und biblischer Perspektive. Es wird untersucht, welche verschiedenen Weisen des Lesens involviert sein können, und es werden die epistemologischen Annahmen geprüft, die der Art des ‚Sehens‘ unterliegen, die er empfiehlt und an der er seiner Meinung nach Anteil hat. Der Artikel betrachtet dann die Implikationen sowohl der Multidisziplinarität, die seiner Methode inhärent ist, als auch der vorgeschlagenen Rolle des ‚Amateurs‘. Danach wird die Frage der Darstellung angesprochen, denn Praktische Theologen müssen darüber nachdenken, wie sie ihre theologischen Reflexionen und Interpretationen auf eine Art und Weise darstellen können, dass sie den öffentlichen Diskurs wirksam herausfordern und öffentliches Handel inspirieren, und dabei, so die Autorin, kann Ruskin außerordentlich hilfreich sein. Der Aufsatz endet mit Betrachtungen über die Hermeneutik bei Gebrauch eines solchen geschichtlichen Paradigmas.

This contribution develops a practical theological reflection on power in relations of ‘pastoral care’. In a first step, different critiques on ‘power’ in pastoral care are analyzed. The author argues that the influence of ‘power’ has to be taken seriously in pastoral relationships. In a second step, a reflection on care for children functions as a starting point for thinking about power, asymmetry and mutuality in pastoral relations. Thereby, the reflection about ‘asymmetry’ in the theories of Emmanuel Levinas and Ivan Boszormenyi-Nagy is considered as fruitful not only in parent-child relations, but also in relations of pastoral care. Reflection on pastoral care should also include thinking in terms of ‘justice’. In a third step, the author argues that a relational anthropology is the basis for an adequate thinking on power, asymmetry and mutuality in pastoral relations. In a fourth step, the author asks how we can avoid thinking about pastoral relationships in an excessively individualistic way, and how we can avoid the individualistic tendency that the parent-child relationship inspires when reflecting on pastoral relationships? She argues that solidarity is a very important aspect in thinking about asymmetrical relationships. Nevertheless, it does not remove the burden to reflect permanently about goals and aims in relationships, about justice and about power balances. Zusammenfassung Dieser Beitrag entwickelt eine praktisch-theologische Reflexion über Macht in ihrem Verhältnis zur Seelsorge. In einem ersten Schritt werden verschiedene Kriterien von „Macht“ in der Seelsorge analysiert. Die Autorin weist daraufhin, dass der Einfluss von „Macht“ in seelsorglichen Beziehungen Ernst zu nehmen ist. In einem zweiten Schritt ist die Reflexion über die Sorge um Kinder ein Ausgangspunkt zum Nachdenken über Macht, Asymmetrie und Gegenseitigkeit in seelsorglichen Beziehungen. In diesem Zusammenhang werden im Rahmen der Reflexionen über Asymmetrie in den Theorien von Emmanuel Levinas und Ivan Boszormenyi-Nagy fruchtbar Anregungen gesehen nicht nur in Bezug auf Eltern-Kind-Beziehungen, sondern auch in Bezug auf die Seelsorge. Auch Reflexionen der Seelsorgetheorie sollten ein Nachdenken über Gerechtigkeit beinhalten. In einem dritten Schritt optiert die Autorin für eine relationale Anthropologie als Basis eines angemessenen Nachdenkens über Macht, Asymmetrie und Gegenseitigkeit in seelsorglichen Beziehungen. In einem vierten Schritt fragt die Autorin, wie es möglich sein kann, das Denken über seelsorgliche Beziehungen auf eine maßlos individualistische Weise zu verhindern und wie es möglich sein kann, die individualistischen Tendenzen zu vermeiden, zu der die Eltern-Kind-Beziehung anregt, wenn man über seelsorgliche Beziehungen nachdenkt? Sie optiert dafür, dass Solidarität ein sehr wichtiger Aspekt im Nachdenken über asymmetrische Beziehungen ist. Dennoch befreit es einen nicht von der Notwendigkeit ständig über die Ziele und Absichten in Beziehungen, über Gerechtigkeit und die Balance von Macht zu reflektieren.

The future of confirmation work is uncertain, which is also evidenced by the results of the International Network for Research and Development of Confirmation and Christian Youth Work dating from 2007. Last but not least it is, in view of pluralisation and individualization, necessary to enquire the conditions which most encourage and give distinction to confirmation work. In doing so, it will be clearly shown that the main focus should be rather on comprehensive context orientated integration than didactical improvement of confirmation work. The varying initial situations of East- and West-Germany prove themselves as very productive for this analysis. The results obtained may also be important for the further European context.

Today the media and subjectivication are inextricably linked. Ronald Hitzler's sociological analysis compares life in contemporary visual media culture to an electronic panopticon. Many new forms of communication rely on the willingness of voluntary public self-thematisation, whilst playing with the desire to observe the intimate. Appropriate forms of communication deeply mould and change today's ways of life. This essay asks for the consequences of these changes concerning the fundamental notions of practical theology and religious education: the subject orientation. Is not a subject-orientated religious praxis and education in danger of the over-all existing compulsion towards self-thematisation? Is this concept of self-thematisation repeating itself in the realm of religion? It will be argued how, subject to a theological orientation, this fundamental request, which is a central challenge of today, can be established and implemented.

In this International Report the situation of Roman Catholic pastoral theology in Poland is described, reflected upon and summed up, in conclusion, as finding itself “on a good course”. The article begins by describing the historical development of the field after the Second World War with regard to its insitutional relations within the Polish theological scene, focussing on chairs as well as on researchers' circles and scientific publications. In the second half of the article, two current theoretical debates are taken up: on the one hand, the question of the nomenclature of the discipline – pastoral theology or practical theology – on the other hand, the question of an adequate method. The article stresses throughout the significance of the Roman Catholic church within Polish society, especially during the period of Communist rule.

This research report is less a survey of the literature than a reflection on the emergence, aims and predominant themes to emerge from theological engagements with issues of disability. It advances a rather bold claim: the theology of disability is central to our understanding of what it means to know who God is and to know what it means to be a human being living fully under God . While such a statement will need justification, the emphasis within this essay is that the theology of disability is not a specialist enterprise for those who are “interested in such things.” Theological reflection on human disability leads us into the very heart of the theological enterprise in both its practical and theoretical aspects. As such it has particular significance for practical theology. Zusammenfassung Dieser Research Report ist weniger ein Literaturbericht als vielmehr eine Reflexion des Aufkommens, der Ziele und vorherrschenden Themen, die zu entwickeln sind, wenn Theologie sich mit dem Thema Behinderung beschäftigt. Dabei wird eine durchaus gewagte These vertreten: Die Theologie der Behinderung ist zentral für unser Verständnis davon, was es bedeutet zu wissen, wer Gott ist, und zu wissen, was es bedeutet ein Mensch zu sein, der ganz und gar von Gott abhängig ist. Eine solche These verlangt natürlich nach Begründung; der Schwerpunkt dieses Beitrags liegt allerdings darin deutlich zu machen, dass die Theologie der Behinderung nicht einfach eine Sonderbeschäftigung derer ist, die sich für diese Fragen interessieren. Theologische Reflexion über Menschen mit Behinderung führt, so die Meinung des Autoren, direkt ins Herz theologischer Unternehmungen, und zwar in praktischer wie in theoretischer Hinsicht. Deshalb hat sie eine ganz besondere Bedeutung für die Praktische Theologie.
