Layer-structured mixed transition metal oxides with the formula LiNi x Mn x Co 1–2 x O 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) are considered as important cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. In an effort to evaluate the relative thermodynamic stabilities of individual compositions in this series, the enthalpies of formation of selected stoichiometries are determined by high temperature oxide melt drop solution calorimetry and verified by ab-initio calculations. The measured and calculated data are in good agreement with each other, and the results show that LiCoO 2 –LiNi 0.5 Mn 0. 5 O 2 solid solution approaches ideal behavior. By increasing x , i. e. by equimolar substitution of Mn 4+ and Ni 2+ for Co 3+ , the enthalpy of formation of LiNi x Mn x Co 1–2 x O 2 from the elements becomes more exothermic, implying increased energetic stability. This conclusion is in agreement with the literature results showing improved structural stability and cycling performance of Ni/Mn-rich LiNi x Mn x Co 1–2 x O 2 compounds cycled to higher cut-off voltages.

Li(Ni 1/3 Mn 1/3 Co 1/3 )O 2 as a cathode material for lithium ion batteries shows good thermal stability, high reversible capacity (290 mAh g −1 ), good rate capability and better results in terms of environmental friendliness. In this paper thin film cathodes in the material system Li–Ni–Mn–Co–O were deposited onto silicon and stainless steel substrates, by non-reactive r.f. magnetron sputtering from a ceramic Li 1.18 (Ni 0.39 Mn 0.19 Co 0.35 )O 1.97 target at various argon working gas pressures between 0.2 Pa and 20 Pa. A comprehensive study on the composition and microstructure was carried out. The results showed that the elemental composition varies depending on argon working gas pressure. The elemental composition was determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy in combination with carrier gas hot extraction. The films showed different grain orientations depending argon working gas pressures. The degree of cation order in the lattice structure of the films deposited at 0.5 Pa and 7 Pa argon working gas pressure, was increased by annealing in an argon/oxygen atmosphere at different pressures for one hour. The microstructure of the films varies with annealing gas pressure and is characterized using X-ray diffraction and unpolarized micro-Raman spectroscopy at room temperature. Electrochemical characterization of as-deposited and annealed films was carried out by galvanostatic cycling in Li–Ni–Mn–Co–O half-cells against metallic lithium. Correlations between process parameters, constitution, microstructure and electrochemical behaviour are discussed in detail.

This article reports on two consecutive joint projects titled “Experimental Thermodynamics and Phase Relations of New Electrode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries”, which were performed in the framework of the WenDeLIB 1473 priority program “Materials with new Design for Lithium Ion Batteries”. Hundreds of samples were synthesized using experimental techniques specifically developed to deal with highly reactive lithium and lithium-containing compounds to generate electrochemical, phase diagram and crystal structure data in the Cu–Li, Li–Sn, Li–Sb, Cu–Li–Sn, Cu–Li–Sb and selected oxide systems. The thermochemical and phase diagram data were subsequently used to develop self-consistent thermodynamic descriptions of several binary systems. In the present contribution, the experimental techniques, working procedures, results and their relevance to the development of new electrode materials for lithium ion batteries are discussed and summarized. The collaboration between the three groups has resulted in more than fifteen (15) published articles during the six-year funding period.

Thin-film calorimetry allows for qualitative and quantitative in-situ analysis of thermodynamic properties of thin films and thin-film systems from room temperature up to 1000 °C. It is based on highly sensitive piezoelectric langasite resonators which serve simultaneously as planar temperature sensors and substrates for the films of interest. Generation or consumption of heat during phase transformations of the films cause deviations from the regular course of the resonance frequency. Thermodynamic data such as phase transformation temperatures and enthalpies are extracted from these deviations. Thin-film calorimetry on Sn and Al thin films is performed to prove the concept. The results demonstrate high reproducibility of the measurement approach and are in agreement with literature data obtained by established calorimetric techniques. The calibration of the system is done in different atmospheres by application of defined heat pulses via heating structures. The latter replace the films of interest and simulate phase transformations to provide detailed analysis of the heat transfer mechanisms occurring in the measurement system. Based on this analysis, a data evaluation concept is developed. Application-relevant studies are performed on thin films of the lithium-ion battery materials NMC(A), NCA, LMO, and MoS 2 . Their phase transformation temperatures and enthalpies are evaluated in oxidizing and reducing atmospheres. Furthermore, their thermodynamic stability ranges are presented. Finally, measurements on all-solid-state thin-film batteries during electrochemical cycling are performed. They demonstrate the suitability of the system for in-situ investigations.

Novel nanocomposites consisting of silicon/tin nanoparticles (n-Si/n-Sn) embedded in silicon carbonitride (SiCN) or silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) ceramic matrices are investigated as possible anode materials for Li-ion batteries. The goal of our study is to exploit the large mass specific capacity of Si/Sn (3 579 mAh g −1 /994 mAh g −1 ), while avoiding rapid capacity fading due to the large volume changes of Si/Sn during Li insertion. We show that a large amount (∼30–40 wt.%) of disordered carbon phase is dispersed within the SiOC/SiCN matrix and stabilizes the Si/Sn nanoparticles with respect to extended reversible lithium ion storage. Silicon nanocomposites are prepared by mixing of a polymeric precursor with commercial and “home-synthesized” crystalline and amorphous silicon. Tin nanocomposites, in contrast, are prepared using a single precursor approach, which allows the in-situ generation of Sn nanoparticles homogeneously dispersed within the SiOC host. The best electrochemical stability along with capacities of 600 – 700 mAh g −1 is obtained when amorphous/porous silicon is used. Mechanisms contributing to the increase of storage capacity and the cycle stability are clarified by analyzing elemental composition, local solid-state structures, intercalation hosts and Li-ion mobility. Our work is supplemented by first-principles based atomistic modeling and thermochemical measurements.

Investigations on the thermodynamics of alloy-type anode materials have been carried out for the quaternary Li–C–Si–Sn system. Phase equilibria and phase stabilities were characterized in the binary subsystems Li–C, Li–Si, Li–Sn. The Calphad method was first used to optimize or completely re-establish all binary subsystems containing Li. For reasons of consistency, the binary subsystem Si–C had to be revisited and its Calphad description was modified. The ternary phase diagrams were then tentatively calculated by extrapolation from the binary subsystems and confirmed by key experiments. No ternary compounds were found. In order to verify the applicability of the anode materials in real batteries, some of the materials were nanostructured by ball milling and spark plasma sintering, the corresponding nanostructures were characterized. Theoretical predictions that nanograined Li 2 C 2 can also be used as cathode material were verified experimentally. The methodologies worked out in the present project (e. g. nanoscale structure transmission electron microscopy analysis, glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy) were also employed in other projects and led to publications concerning other materials such as Mg alloys, carbon nanofibers and an Mn-based antiperovskite.

In this work we summarize a symbiotic approach to combine experimental and theoretical investigations for the derivation of high quality thermodynamic data for the description of potential lithium ion battery materials. The methodology of this concept was demonstrated in detail by exploring and describing the properties of the lithium monosilicide phase LiSi. The procedures were also applied in a series of investigations to all major Li x Si y -phases which will be reviewed briefly. Regarding the LiSi phase, the measured and calculated isobaric heat capacity, which may enable further thermodynamic investigations (e. g. with CALPHAD method) of the phase diagram of the Li–Si-system is presented. The heat capacity of the stable phase LiSi was measured as a function of temperature in a range from (2 to 673) K and compared with corresponding ab-initio and molecular dynamic calculations resulting in values for absolute entropies. The heat of formation of the system was determined in an unconventional manner via hydrogenation experiments.

Compounds in the Li–Cu–O system are of technological interest due to their electrochemical properties which make them attractive as electrode materials, i. e., in future lithium ion batteries. In order to select promising compositions for such applications reliable thermochemical data are a prerequisite. Although various groups have investigated individual ternary phases using different experimental setups, up to now, no systematic study of all relevant phases is available in the literature. In this study, we combine drop solution calorimetry with density function theory calculations to systematically investigate the thermodynamic properties of ternary Li–Cu–O phases. In particular, we present a consistently determined set of enthalpies of formation, Gibbs energies and heat capacities for LiCuO, Li 2 CuO 2 and LiCu 2 O 2 and compare our results with existing literature.

Conversion-type lithium ion batteries experience severe and partly irreversible phase transitions during operation. Such phase transitions reduce the crystallite size and therefore enhance the exchange of the Li ions. Concurrently, the irreversible nature of the phase transitions may deteriorate the cycling stability and the long-term capacity of conversion-type batteries. In this contribution, the observed correlations between the crystal structures of compounds which are employed as anodes in conversion-type Li ion cells, the capacity and the long-term stability of these cells are discussed. The central characteristics affecting the performance of conversion-type Li ion cells seem to be the similarity of crystal structures of intermediately forming phases during the charge/discharge process, which facilitates strong local preferred orientation of nanocrystallites of neighboring phases and for the formation of local strain fields at partially coherent phase boundaries. The effect of the above-mentioned phenomena on capacity and cycle stability is argued from the point of view of a possibly impeded ion exchange. Equilibrium open circuit potentials are calculated using the CALPHAD method. However, it is shown that in order to better reproduce the experimentally determined plateau voltages, thermodynamic descriptions of the non-equilibrium intermediate phases have to be included. In addition, the stabilization of the conversion reaction by the electrolyte is pointed out.

Thin film battery electrodes of the olivine structure LiFePO 4 and the spinel phase LiMn 2 O 4 are deposited through ion-beam sputtering. The intercalation kinetics is studied by cyclo-voltammetry using variation of the cycling rate over 4 to 5 orders of magnitude. The well-defined layer geometry allows a detailed quantitative analysis. It is shown that LiFePO 4 clearly undergoes phase separation during intercalation, although the material is nano-confined and very high charging rates are applied. We present a modified Randles–Sevcik evaluation adapted to phase-separating systems. Both the charging current and the overpotential depend on the film thickness in a systematic way. The analysis yields evidence that the grain boundaries are important short circuit paths for fast transport. They increase the electrochemical active area with increasing layer thickness. Evidence is obtained that the grain boundaries in LiFePO 4 have the character of an ion-conductor of vanishing electronic conductivity.

In-situ neutron reflectometry and ex-situ secondary ion mass spectrometry in combination with electrochemical methods were used to study the lithiation of amorphous silicon electrodes. For that purpose specially designed closed three-electrode electrochemical cells with thin silicon films as the working electrode and lithium as counter and reference electrodes were used. The neutron reflectometry results obtained in-situ during galvanostatic cycling show that the incorporation, redistribution and removal of Li in amorphous silicon during a lithiation cycle can be monitored. It was possible to measure the volume modification during lithiation, which is found to be rather independent of cycle number, current density and film thickness and in good agreement with first-principles calculations as given in literature. Indications for an inhomogeneous lithiation mechanism were found by secondary ion mass spectrometry measurements. Lithium tracer diffusion experiments indicate that the diffusivities inside the lithiated region ( D > 10 −15 m 2 s −1 ) are considerably higher than in pure amorphous silicon as known from literature. This suggests a kinetics based explanation for the occurrence of an inhomogeneous lithiation mechanism.

An interlaboratory study was performed to determine the heat capacity of an active material for lithium-ion batteries with layered structure and nominal composition LiNi 1/3 · Mn 1/3 Co 1/3 O 2 (NMC111). The commercial sample, which was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction and inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectroscopy, is single phase (α-NaFeO 2 crystal structure) with a composition of Li 1.02 Ni 0.32 Mn 0.31 Co 0.30 O 2 . Heat capacity measurements of the homogeneous sample were performed at five laboratories using different operators, methods, devices, temperature ranges, gas atmospheres and crucible materials. The experimental procedures from each laboratory are presented and the results of the individual laboratories are analyzed. Based on a comprehensive evaluation of the data from each laboratory, the heat capacity of the NMC111 sample from 315 K to 1 020 K is obtained with an expanded reproducibility uncertainty of less than 1.22 %.
