This article explores a shifting perception of the ontological structure of the world in contemporary Japanese Internet kaidan (scary stories), focusing on the evolution of digital technologies that enabled two influential isekai (otherworld) narratives: “Kisaragi Station” (2004) and “Isekai ni Iku Hoho” (“The Elevator Game” in English, 2008). “Kisaragi Station” involves a narrative in which a woman posts real-time updates via mobile phone from a station in the otherworld. This narrative builds on the early 2000s trend of live reporting from haunted places or abandoned villages, but extends the situation into the isekai , a location entirely disconnected from our world. On the other hand, “The Elevator Game” describes a method of accessing an otherworld through meaningless, repetitive moves, using an elevator. By examining these two stories, this article suggests two salient features in contemporary conceptualizations of the otherworld in Japan. First, these realms have reconfigured from traditional ones such as heaven and hell into parallel worlds akin to our own. Second, there is what this article termed “the ontological gamification,” which is the idea that reality may be perceived as a computer simulation like a digital game, and that glitches are used to make sense of strange occurrences in our ordinary lives.

This paper focuses on two pieces of folklore, The Rainbow Bridge and Hell’s Ginseng , with the aim of discussing how the spread of folklore in contemporary society differs from that of the past. The Rainbow Bridge, a typical motif of the afterlife spoken of when a pet dies, and the role of the Internet in its spread has been extremely significant. Conversely, Hell’s Ginseng is thought to have been influenced by printed material that has spread worldwide in modern times, prompting a reconsideration of traditional folklore research perspectives that emphasise oral traditions. This paper points out that the written word, print, and the Internet have had a significant impact on the spread of folklore and identifies the influence of print and the Internet in the global spread of Hell’s Ginseng and The Rainbow Bridge .

Koi culture is a Japanese national tradition, created in that country over a century ago, and this tradition has since been exported to, and localized in, many countries around the world. China is one such example, with koi energetically imported into the country for around 20 years and appreciated by many Chinese people. Today, koi have a significant influence on the spiritual landscape of the Chinese people and are now described as, and believed to be, beings with the spiritual power to bring good fortune. This vernacular belief concerning koi was created by an internet meme disseminating the image and narrative of koi as a symbol of good fortune through social media. This vernacular expression and discourse online have led many Chinese people to internalize koi culture as their own national tradition, and to recognize and speak of it as a uniquely Chinese tradition. The internet has accelerated this internalization, and when compared against oral communication and traditional media, the superior range and speed of information transmission allowed by this medium puts it in a category of its own. The internet also involves an interactive model of generation and transmission of information and narratives, where the public can act not only as simply recipients of various forms of those information and narratives, but also as their creators and distributors. These characteristics of the medium have made it a catalyst behind the collaborative “invention” of national traditions by the public at large, one that has significantly accelerated the internalization of those national traditions. This paper examines the manner in which vernacular beliefs and folk narratives concerning koi generated through online communication have become a driving force behind major transformations in the perception of tradition in the daily lives of the Chinese people.

Zusammenfassung Dieser Artikel befasst sich mit neuen Religionen und esoterischen Erzählungen, die im Japan des 20. Jahrhunderts einflussreich waren, sowie mit sozialen und politischen Hintergründen. Zunächst geht es um eschatologische Erzählungen der „Ōmoto“-Religion, die mit denjenigen von Kanji Ishihara, einer der führenden militärischen Persönlichkeiten Japans aus der Vorkriegszeit, verglichen werden. Zweitens richtet sich der Blick auf Erzählungen der „Wachturm“-Religion (Zeugen Jehovas), die aus den USA nach Japan kam, sowie auf Erzählungen der aus Südkorea eingewanderten Religion „Vereinigungskirche“. Überdies wird die Eschatologie von Nostradamus, die von Ben Gotō in Japan verbreitet wurde, mit derjenigen der Sekte Ōmu Shinrikyō verglichen, die die japanische Gesellschaft mit ihren Terroranschlägen erschütterte. Schließlich rückt die Gegenwart in den Fokus: QAnon, die ihren Ursprung in den USA hat, und Yamato-Q aus Japan. Obwohl sich alle diese eschatologischen Erzählungen stark von denen volkstümlicher Erzähler unterscheiden, verfangen sie doch wie diese dadurch, dass sie versprechen, ihre Adressaten und Zuhörer glücklich zu machen.

Zusammenfassung Das Wort „Humor“ lautet auf Japanisch yūmoa . Es ist ein aus dem Englischen stammendes Fremdwort und bedeutet lustige Geschichten, die niemanden verletzen. Japanischer Humor basiert oft auf Wortspielen, Wortverwechslungen oder Missverständnissen. Wortverwechslungen passieren in der Eile, in emotionalen Ausnahmesituationen oder zufällig. Außerdem lacht man in Japan über körperliche Schmerzen anderer, also aus Schadenfreude, aber auch über eigene Misserfolge. All diese Begebenheiten werden erzählt und in Alltagsgespräche eingebettet, aber nicht (wie Witze) mit der Floskel „Hast du das schon gehört?“ begonnen. Der Beitrag untersucht japanischen Humor einerseits kulturgeschichtlich, andererseits an Beispielgeschichten, wie sie sich gegenwärtig im Internet finden.

This article is based on the first collection of urban legends (ULs) in Taiwan (2019), with summaries of contemporary legends in Spanish, English, and Chinese. The discussion here revolves around how cultural differences reach such an extreme that they tend to make complex, not only the collection of ULs and their variants, but also their very essence and classification. To this end, social, cultural, and psychosocial factors that intervene in the formation, structure, and belief in ULs in Taiwan will be exposed and analyzed. In addition, the research will expose the idiosyncratic characteristics of Taiwanese culture, which favor the spread and acceptance of contemporary legends as part of the empirical reality.

The second half of the twentieth century saw important paradigmatic changes occur in anthropology, ethnology, and other humanities disciplines, shifting the focus of attention from rural worlds to urban environments. Marking this shift in folkloristics, the urban legend was proposed. Despite its early popularity among folklore scholars, evidence kept piling up that the narratives signified by this term are not necessarily bound to urban areas, because of which the term’s analytical value, and consequently its use in scholarly debate, gradually declined. Nevertheless, following the large commercial success of certain legend anthologies, the term was eagerly appropriated by mass media and popular culture, crossing language barriers, enabling its entrance into the world of vernacular. Once there, the term was embraced by the ‘folk’, the bearers of legends themselves – becoming emic in the process – and was attributed a whole new set of conceptual and connotative meanings. When studying vernacular culture and communication, one can thus observe four different emic conceptualizations of urban legend : urban legend as a folk genre, urban legend as a frame of reference, urban legend as a metonym, and urban legend as a marker of identity.

Zusammenfassung Die Studie interessiert sich – ausgehend von einem Märchenstoff – für ein altes Wunschmotiv der Menschen und für die Wandlungen, die es im Laufe der Zeit erfahren hat: die Chance nämlich, wider alle naturgesetzliche Wahrscheinlichkeit in widriger kalter Jahreszeit herbeigeträumte süße reife Früchte ernten und genießen zu können. Es geht also nicht nur um die Faszination des Absurden, sondern auch um die Frage der Realisierbarkeit des scheinbar Paradoxen. Am Ende freilich vertrocknet der alte kostbare Wunsch in der Entwicklung der banalen technischen Kultur: in den Kühltheken des Supermarkts. Der süße Traum hat sich in die Langeweile des alltäglich Machbaren verwandelt.

Zusammenfassung Die Märchen der Brüder Grimm fanden ihren Weg in die Waldorfschulen dank Rudolf Steiner. Dessen von Anthroposophie und Geisteswissenschaft geprägte Überlegungen zu Märchen gelten in akademischen Kreisen jedoch als unwissenschaftlich. Zumal Steiner die Grimm’schen Märchen benutzt hat, um seine eigenen Thesen über Mythen und über die Organisation der Welt zu illustrieren. Nur in diesem Sinne sollten Märchen für die pädagogische Arbeit an Waldorfschulen herangezogen werden. Dieser Beitrag möchte zeigen, welche Bedeutung die Brüder Grimm für Steiner hatten und wie er deren Märchensammlung verwendet hat. Untersucht werden einerseits zwei zentrale Märchen-Vorträge Steiners. Andererseits hat Steiner mit Lehrern Gespräche über Märchen geführt. Die Protokolle sind erhalten und werden als zweite Quelle herangezogen.
