Research on simulation testing of humidity-controlled salt spray corrosion environment for electrical products under working conditions

Traditional neutral salt spray tests fail to accurately simulate the accelerated corrosion that occurs under actual energized conditions. We have developed a salt spray test chamber capable of reducing the relative humidity (RH) in the testing environment to prevent short circuits, insulation failures, and other faults that lead to premature damage during testing. Initially, the effect of salt spray concentration on corrosion at 85 % RH was examined, and it was found that the corrosion rate does not increase when the concentration surpasses 50 mg/m 3 . The humidity-controllable salt spray test demonstrated a closer match to real environmental corrosion, judging by both the appearance of corrosion and the acceleration ratios across different metals, where the acceleration ratio difference between maximum and minimum values was reduced from 18.6 times to 1.4 times. The influence of RH on the corrosion rate was revealed, with the highest rate observed at 75 % RH. Lastly, we proposed optimal parameters for energized salt spray tests, evaluated the failure modes of several products under these tests, preliminarily confirmed the consistency and acceleration effects of this method for electrical products in real marine atmospheric conditions.

Method of accounting for the accelerated destruction of coupon edges when determining the effectiveness of corrosion inhibitors

Gravimetric tests are widely used to evaluate the effectiveness of corrosion inhibitors in pipelines and equipment. However, there is always some measurement error due to the more intense corrosion damage to the edges of the samples, and the smaller the sample size, the greater this error will be. The developed method involves testing coupons of different sizes under the same conditions, and then mathematically calculating excess weight loss along the edges of the coupon. In the experiment conducted by the authors, when testing samples in an aggressive environment without an inhibitor, the measured corrosion rate turned out to be 9 % higher than the real one. Similarly, in an environment with an imidazoline inhibitor, the corrosion rate turned out to be 15 % higher than the real one, taking into account the edge effect. The application of the method of accounting for the excessive corrosion rate of the coupon edge will increase the accuracy of gravimetric measurements and increase the accuracy of predicting the timing of structural damage. It will also reduce the costs associated with additional inhibitory treatment.

Eco-friendly water-based epoxy resins (WEP) coatings are widely applied for surface corrosion protection in marine engineering structures but their anti-corrosion performance needs to be further improved. A novel multifunctional benzotriazole (BTA)-loaded PANI@SiO 2 @h-BN (PSB) composite filler was developed to enhance the anti-corrosion and self-repairing capabilities of WEP coatings. Through sol-gel modification and in-situ polymerization, SiO 2 decoration facilitated the uniform dispersion of two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) in WEP matrices, while polyaniline (PANI) provided active passivation protection. The synergistic effects of PANI and releasing of BTA inhibitors enable corrosion rates orders of magnitudes lower than pure WEP coating. Electrochemical characterization demonstrated exceptional barrier properties (|Z| at 0.01 Hz > 10 9  Ω cm 2 after 30 days immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl) and self-repairing functionality through chelate/passivation layer formation. The composite coating exhibited enhanced hydrophobicity, mechanical durability, providing a sustainable solution for marine infrastructure protection.

Effect of Al and Y addition on corrosion properties of magnesium alloy

Due to its lightweight structure, magnesium alloys have been widely used in the automotive and aerospace industries. However, the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloy is a key factor limiting their further application. Rare earth alloying is an economical and effective method to improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys. In this work, Mg–2Y–2Al (wt%) alloy was prepared by conventional casting method. After 168 h of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, the corrosion rates determined by hydrogen evolution test and mass loss experiment were 0.57 mm/y and 1.01 mm/y, respectively. The results provide a basic understanding of the synergistic effect of Al and Y on enhancing the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys. The co-addition of Al and Y is conducive to the formation of a stronger protective film on the alloy surface and effectively inhibits the corrosion of alloys. It provides important insights for the future development of high-performance and corrosion-resistant magnesium alloys.

An assessment of expired drugs’ potential as effective inhibitors to combat carbon steel and mild steel corrosion

Metal corrosion is a destructive process that must be managed carefully to prevent unintentional material losses. Most organic and inorganic compounds reported as corrosion inhibitors are highly toxic, causing severe environmental pollution. Recently, expired drugs have been tried as green inhibitors for many metals. The effectiveness of expired drugs as corrosion inhibitors was investigated by techniques such as weight loss, linear polarization, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods. The surface morphology of specimen metals was tested before and after the addition of drug inhibitors using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, etc., to confirm the inhibition behavior of the drugs. Additional parameters by quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamics study were computed, and the outcomes agreed with the experimental results. These investigations demonstrated the effectiveness of drugs as corrosion inhibitors and opened up possibilities for managing the disposal of expired drugs. The present paper gives an overview of the usage of expired drugs as efficient inhibitors to control the corrosion of carbon steel and mild steel. The comparison of inhibition performances of different expired drugs and the mechanism of corrosion inhibition have been discussed. The existing challenges faced in using expired drugs as inhibitors were highlighted.

Estimation of atmospheric chloride deposition and its corrosion effect in the coastal region of China

Atmospheric chloride deposition rate is the important factor in atmospheric corrosion. However, current research on the distribution of atmospheric chloride deposition in coastal region of China is limited, hindering accurate quantitative analysis of its corrosion effect. We conducted environment monitoring, deposition rate measurement, and metals exposure experiments in coastal region of Hainan Province, China. By analyzing the holistic process of atmospheric chloride, we proposed a deposition rate estimation model considering production, transportation, and deposition (PTD) processes. The proposed PTD regression model significantly improves estimation accuracy and generalizability, achieving an R 2 of 0.88 on the measured dataset. Additionally, based on environmental exposure experiments, we developed a metal corrosion loss assessment model for coastal region, well-validated on the four metals tested, with all R 2 values exceeding 0.92. Using these models, we constructed spatial and temporal distribution maps of atmospheric chloride deposition rate and its corrosion effects in coastal region of Hainan Province, China, providing guidance for the corrosion assessment, protection, and maintenance of metal products.

Advancements in prediction models for corrosion in oil and gas pipelines

Oil and gas pipelines play an important role in the energy transportation industry, but metal corrosion can affect the safe operation of pipeline equipment. This study uses CiteSpace software to synthesize and analyze corrosion models and keywords from research institutions, countries, and methods related to pipeline corrosion prediction. The investigation into the mechanisms of pipeline metal corrosion, with a specific emphasis on CO 2 and H 2 S corrosion, has revealed that several factors influence the process, including temperature, partial pressure, medium composition and the corrosion product film. In addition, the study provides a comprehensive review of pipeline corrosion prediction methods and models. These include traditional empirical, semi-empirical, and mechanism-based prediction models, as well as advanced machine learning techniques such as random forest, artificial neural network model, support vector machine, and dose-response function. Although there are many ways to improve model performance, no universally accepted methods have been established. Therefore, further in-depth research is needed to improve the accuracy of these models and provide guidance for improving the operational safety of pipelines.

Effect of seawater intrusion in water-glycol hydraulic fluid on the electrochemical corrosion behavior of carbon steel and stainless steel

Water-glycol hydraulic fluid (HFC) has been applied in deep-sea hydraulic systems owing to its flame retardant and environmental performance. However, the corrosion characteristics of metals in HFC have not been widely investigated. The electrochemical corrosion behavior of 45# steel and 17-4PH stainless steel in HFC containing four concentrations of seawater (0 %, 3 %, 11 %, 19 %) were evaluated by potentiodynamic polarizations (−800 mV∼1,500 mV vs. Hg/HgO), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiostatic polarizations (0.5 V Hg/HgO ) and immersion test (240 h). The research results indicate that a corrosion-resistant carbon film is formed on the surface of 17-4PH stainless steel and 45# steel in HFC. The infrared spectroscopy results suggest that the formation of the carbon film is due to the adsorption of the benzene ring of tolyltriazole (TTA) in HFC by the metal C. 45# steel exhibited stronger corrosion resistance than 17-4PH stainless steel due to the formation of a denser carbon film through high carbon content adsorption. The infiltration of seawater into HFC enhanced its corrosiveness by enhancing its conductivity and Cl − pitting on the C film. This research is significant as it sheds light on the corrosion behavior of metals in HFC, a crucial aspect in the design and maintenance of deep-sea hydraulic systems.

Ti/IrO 2 –Ta 2 O 5 coated anodes were widely used in the production process of aluminum foil that is vital raw material for high-performance electronic components, exhibits excellent service durability in sulfuric acid medium, but its lifespan is significantly reduced when used in ammonium citrate neutral electrolyte. The evolution of constant current accelerated lifetime process of Ti/IrO 2 –Ta 2 O 5 anodes in 100 g/L ammonium citrate aqueous solution was systematically studied. The corrosion mechanism was revealed by physical characterization and electrochemical measurements. During electrolysis, IrO 2 was gradually dissolved due to the interaction of IrO 2 coating and the electrolyte. Consequently, the corrosion mechanism of the compact IrO 2 –Ta 2 O 5 coating is the effect of substantial dissolution of the active components.

The healthcare industry has closely considered magnesium (Mg) alloy because of its exceptional mechanical qualities, biological solid compatibility, and biodegradable properties. Since it has reactive chemistry of natural world, magnesium alloy typically exhibits excessive rate of deterioration in the physiological environment. Thus, surface modification research has become a hotspot for obtaining different potential abilities of magnesium alloy in medical applications. The coatings of magnesium alloy surfaces are discussed in this work based on their many types: metals (metal hydroxides and oxides), inorganic/nonmetallic, and natural/synthetic polymers. The metal oxide coating is loose and porous, and it is often used together with other types of coatings to form a composite coating. The metal hydroxide coating is easily damaged by Cl − ions in corrosive medium and cannot provide long-term effective protection to substrate. Inorganic nonmetallic coatings have more space defects and greater brittleness, which used in few bone implantation procedures. Polymer materials generally have better biocompatibility and biodegradability. However, polymer coatings have a weak binding force to the substrate and limited mechanical properties. The development prospects of magnesium alloy surface coatings for biomedical applications are forecasted together with the manufacturing techniques, resistance to corrosion, and compatibility for biological systems has been discussed.

The prediction method of the content of salt mist aerosol in marine atmospheric environment based on mechanism and data

Salt mist is a significant environmental factor that causes corrosion of marine and coastal engineering facilities and electronic equipment failures. This paper presents a numerical analysis of the properties, formation, migration, and deposition processes of salt mist aerosols according to previous research. We find that salt mist is distributed as exponential distribution in the sea of vertical direction, and the number of them is directly proportional to the wind speed and the effective wave height, the critical velocity of salt mist sedimentation is proportional to the square of the particle radius. Through qualitative and quantitative analysis of related parameters, an empirical model of salt mist concentration distribution and deposition process are established, thereby enabling the calculation of salt mist concentration and deposition rate in coastal land and marine atmospheric environments. To compare with existing prediction methods, the parameters of this model are more comprehensive, not only include various meteorological data, but marine environmental data and other geographic data for calculating location. To illustrate, the model is applied to predict the salt mist concentration and deposition in the Philippines, using readily available meteorological data inputs such as wind speed, direction, temperature, and humidity. This enables the evaluation of corrosion levels.

Microscopic analysis of the destruction of passive film on stainless steel caused by sulfide in simulated cooling water

Sulfide often appears in circulating cooling water due to the presence of sulfate reducing bacteria and could affect corrosion behavior of cooling pipe metals such as stainless steel. Scanning Kelvin probe and scanning electrochemical microscope measurements, combined with electrochemical testing, were used to investigate the micro-electrochemical information of passive film and analyzed the influence of sulfide in simulated cooling water on corrosion resistance of stainless steel. Results showed that the presence of sulfide in water caused a negative shift in surface potential of stainless steel, an increase in surface potential difference, and an increase in local response current on the surface, resulting in a current peak that gradually increased over time. The analysis results of passive film composition showed that the presence of sulfide caused increase in the ratio of Fe/Cr and OH − /O 2− , as well as the content of Cr(OH) 3 and Fe(OH) 3 in passive film, whereas caused a decrease of Cr 2 O 3 content, and led to the formation of FeS 2 in the passive film. These changes in the composition of the passive film made it easier for active sites to appear on the surface of stainless steel and enhanced the conductivity of the passive film and significantly reducing its protective performance.

Why is the modified wedge-opening-loaded test inadequate for characterizing gaseous hydrogen embrittlement in pipeline steels? A review

International hydrogen pipeline code ASME B31.12 requires the measurement of hydrogen affected fracture toughness using constant load or displacement tests standardized in ASTM E1681. The modified wedge-opening-loaded (WOL) specimen is loaded with a bolt that sets a constant crack mouth opening displacement and the initial stress intensity factor (K Iapp ). In this review paper, the sizing restrictions imposed by the testing procedures are analyzed considering the strength, wall thickness, diameter and toughness of existing and commercially available pipelines. The conclusion is that specimens with the standard geometry for constant displacement test in ASTM E1681 cannot be extracted from most used pipelines. The equations proposed in standards to calculate K Iapp as a function of crack mouth opening displacement cannot be applied and particular expressions must be calculated case by case. Furthermore, loading the specimen to the required K Iapp results in exceedingly large normal stresses in the bolt, increasing the risk of fracture of the bolt during loading of the specimen. Additionally, literature results of pipeline stees tested with the constant displacement in gaseous hydrogen are discussed and their significance is analyzed considering the material performance measured under rising displacement tests in gaseous hydrogen.

In this paper, the research progress of zirconium (Zr) alloys is critically reviewed from the aspects of application, development status, and degradation mechanism in a nuclear environment. The review focused on the application of Zr alloys in the nuclear industry, which are widely used due to their low thermal neutron absorption, good corrosion resistance, and excellent mechanical properties. However, with the increasing requirements in the chemical and medical fields, the application of Zr alloys in these non-nuclear fields is growing due to their excellent properties like good corrosion resistance and low thermal expansion coefficient, as summarized in this review. Additionally, the degradation mechanisms of Zr alloy exposed to a corrosive environment, i.e., corrosion and hydrogen uptake, and the role of alloying selection in minimizing these two phenomena is considered in this review, based on pretransition kinetics and the loss of oxide protectiveness at transition. This is corroborated by the discussion on alloying elements with beneficial and detrimental effects on the corrosion performance of Zr alloys, as well as elements with contradicting effects on Zr alloys corrosion performance owing to the discrepancies in literature. Overall, this review can be leveraged in future alloy design to further improve Zr alloys corrosion resistance in nuclear applications, thus ultimately improving their integrity.

The inhibitory performance of amino-dicarbonitrile derivative (ANC) for the protection of Q235 steel corrosion in trichloroacetic acid (Cl 3 CCOOH) solution was investigated using various methods. The surface adsorption of ANC was screened by SEM, AFM, and XPS methods. Based on the data, it can be concluded that ANC effectively inhibits Q235 steel in 0.5 M Cl 3 CCOOH solution, with 94.3 % inhibition efficiency ( η %) at 100 mg/L. The Freundlich model describes how ANC adsorbs on the surface of Q235 steel. Anodic and cathodic reactions are both retarded by ANC, a mixed type inhibitor. The depressed capacitive loop observed is the Nyquist diagram. The double layer capacitance decreases but the charge transfer resistance rises noticeably with the addition of ANC. The AFM and SEM micrographs provide unambiguous confirmation of the effective inhibition of ANC. The XPS result shows that ANC molecules functional groups are attached to the iron atoms.

The presented research investigates the corrosion behavior of commercially pure titanium (cp-Ti) and amorphous calcium phosphate–chitosan (ACP@ChOL) coatings enriched with selenium on titanium in simulated body fluid (SBF). Using potentiodynamic polarization techniques, it was sought to derive essential corrosion parameters – corrosion potential, corrosion current density, breakdown potential, and passivation current. This study pioneers a comparative analysis of the corrosion stability of both samples. SEM/EDS analysis of surfaces pre- and postpotentiodynamic measurements offered insights into morphology and elemental composition. The aim was to elucidate the corrosion mechanism by integrating these techniques. Additionally, spontaneous corrosion behavior over 7 days, monitoring changes in open circuit potential, polarization resistance, and impedance were investigated. Furthermore, the antimicrobial efficacy of ACP@ChOL enriched with Se on titanium was assessed against Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus , and Candida albicans , as well as in vitro release of Se. The presented study extends understanding, offering a unique perspective on the corrosion behavior and antimicrobial attributes of ACP@ChOL coatings enriched with Se on titanium. This composite material exhibits promise for medical applications, presenting an innovative avenue for addressing corrosion concerns and potentially reducing antibiotic reliance.

This paper studies the impact of the changing climate on atmospheric corrosion loss in the future low pollution environment. Two climate change scenarios (SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5) are studied and they reveal a warmer environment with decreasing sulphur dioxide contamination and slightly changed relative humidity and precipitation from 2010 to 2100. As a consequence, environment corrosivity is both enhanced by increased time-of-wetness and weakened by decreased sulphur dioxide deposition rate. To consider the low pollution environment in the future changing climate, a relative error minimized short-term corrosion model and a re-scaled power-linear long-term corrosion model are proposed. Corrosion loss evaluation results show that, on the overall scale which is mainly representative of remote rural areas, first-year corrosion loss C of different metals under the two SSPs has different trends. On the regional scale of urban and marine areas with high SO 2 or Cl − levels, C will decrease continuously under both SSPs for all three metals. The long-term corrosion loss will also decrease as the environment continues to be less and less corrosive.
