As advancements in medical technology continue to evolve, the demand for innovative implant materials has become increasingly vital for enhancing overall experience of patients. Traditional non-biodegradable implants, while effective, often necessitate removal through invasive and costly surgical interventions, leading to significant clinical challenges. To address these issues, the development of biodegradable materials has gained prominence due to their ability to gradually degrade and be absorbed by the body, presenting a compelling alternative to permanent implants. This review examines both biodegradable and non-biodegradable metallic implants, focusing on key aspects such as biocompatibility, mechanical properties, and degradation kinetics. Furthermore, it explores the applications of these materials across various medical fields, emphasizing their potential to improve patient care. This review aims to bridge the gap between laboratory innovations, clinical practices, and industrial applications by summarizing current research. It offers valuable insights for researchers, clinicians, and industry professionals, contributing to the ongoing dialogue regarding the future of implant technology and advancing the understanding of material selection for diverse medical applications.

The inhibitory performance of amino-dicarbonitrile derivative (ANC) for the protection of Q235 steel corrosion in trichloroacetic acid (Cl 3 CCOOH) solution was investigated using various methods. The surface adsorption of ANC was screened by SEM, AFM, and XPS methods. Based on the data, it can be concluded that ANC effectively inhibits Q235 steel in 0.5 M Cl 3 CCOOH solution, with 94.3 % inhibition efficiency ( η %) at 100 mg/L. The Freundlich model describes how ANC adsorbs on the surface of Q235 steel. Anodic and cathodic reactions are both retarded by ANC, a mixed type inhibitor. The depressed capacitive loop observed is the Nyquist diagram. The double layer capacitance decreases but the charge transfer resistance rises noticeably with the addition of ANC. The AFM and SEM micrographs provide unambiguous confirmation of the effective inhibition of ANC. The XPS result shows that ANC molecules functional groups are attached to the iron atoms.

Salt mist is a significant environmental factor that causes corrosion of marine and coastal engineering facilities and electronic equipment failures. This paper presents a numerical analysis of the properties, formation, migration, and deposition processes of salt mist aerosols according to previous research. We find that salt mist is distributed as exponential distribution in the sea of vertical direction, and the number of them is directly proportional to the wind speed and the effective wave height, the critical velocity of salt mist sedimentation is proportional to the square of the particle radius. Through qualitative and quantitative analysis of related parameters, an empirical model of salt mist concentration distribution and deposition process are established, thereby enabling the calculation of salt mist concentration and deposition rate in coastal land and marine atmospheric environments. To compare with existing prediction methods, the parameters of this model are more comprehensive, not only include various meteorological data, but marine environmental data and other geographic data for calculating location. To illustrate, the model is applied to predict the salt mist concentration and deposition in the Philippines, using readily available meteorological data inputs such as wind speed, direction, temperature, and humidity. This enables the evaluation of corrosion levels.

This paper studies the impact of the changing climate on atmospheric corrosion loss in the future low pollution environment. Two climate change scenarios (SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5) are studied and they reveal a warmer environment with decreasing sulphur dioxide contamination and slightly changed relative humidity and precipitation from 2010 to 2100. As a consequence, environment corrosivity is both enhanced by increased time-of-wetness and weakened by decreased sulphur dioxide deposition rate. To consider the low pollution environment in the future changing climate, a relative error minimized short-term corrosion model and a re-scaled power-linear long-term corrosion model are proposed. Corrosion loss evaluation results show that, on the overall scale which is mainly representative of remote rural areas, first-year corrosion loss C of different metals under the two SSPs has different trends. On the regional scale of urban and marine areas with high SO 2 or Cl − levels, C will decrease continuously under both SSPs for all three metals. The long-term corrosion loss will also decrease as the environment continues to be less and less corrosive.

The presented research investigates the corrosion behavior of commercially pure titanium (cp-Ti) and amorphous calcium phosphate–chitosan (ACP@ChOL) coatings enriched with selenium on titanium in simulated body fluid (SBF). Using potentiodynamic polarization techniques, it was sought to derive essential corrosion parameters – corrosion potential, corrosion current density, breakdown potential, and passivation current. This study pioneers a comparative analysis of the corrosion stability of both samples. SEM/EDS analysis of surfaces pre- and postpotentiodynamic measurements offered insights into morphology and elemental composition. The aim was to elucidate the corrosion mechanism by integrating these techniques. Additionally, spontaneous corrosion behavior over 7 days, monitoring changes in open circuit potential, polarization resistance, and impedance were investigated. Furthermore, the antimicrobial efficacy of ACP@ChOL enriched with Se on titanium was assessed against Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus , and Candida albicans , as well as in vitro release of Se. The presented study extends understanding, offering a unique perspective on the corrosion behavior and antimicrobial attributes of ACP@ChOL coatings enriched with Se on titanium. This composite material exhibits promise for medical applications, presenting an innovative avenue for addressing corrosion concerns and potentially reducing antibiotic reliance.
