Supramolecular chemistry is one of the exciting branches of chemistry where non-covalent interactions between molecules and the ensuing supramolecular structures have been studied for various applications. The present review provides a comprehensive outlook on the applications and potentials of supramolecular chemistry in corrosion and biofouling prevention. Reported works associating supramolecular chemistry with corrosion are systematically discussed under two sections: (i) surface coatings and (ii) corrosion inhibitors that include supramolecular polymers, host-guest inclusion compounds, organic-inorganic hybrid materials, and supramolecular structures of graphene, crown ethers, self-assembled monolayers, etc. Different strategies for making antifouling surfaces based on block copolymers/gel systems, host-guest systems, and metal-organic structures are briefed. Cyclodextrin and mesoporous silica-based host-guest systems are extensively discussed, as they are the most prominent materials of current research interest. Future potentials for developments are presented. The review is expected to be beneficial to enhance supramolecular chemistry-related research and development in corrosion and biofouling prevention.

Field and laboratory studies have verified that sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) can assist in cracking, but there is no comprehensive review in literature related to this research. In this paper, a mini-review was done giving the available information on SRB-assisted cracking, including actual cases, laboratory investigations, thermodynamic interpretation, cracking mechanisms, and affecting factors. Furthermore, the existing problems were regularly extracted, and the possible development tendency prospected.

This paper summarizes the anti-corrosive and anti-erosive properties of water-ethylene glycol based commercial coolant dispersed with nanomaterials. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), silver nanoparticles (Ag) and nanosized alumina particles (Al 2 O 3 ) are dispersed in 0.5% weight in automotive coolants and tested for anti-corrosive properties as per ASTM standards. Prior to dispersion, the nanomaterials are surface modified to get good stability in coolant solutions. The corrosion resistance is measured in terms of weight loss of materials that is commonly used in automotive systems. It is found that oxidized MWCNTs are suitable to automotive systems while silver and Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles are found to be deleterious in nature.

Stainless steel (SS) is a very corrosion-resistant alloy used in different industrial plants because of its chemical and mechanical properties. However, the high chloride concentration in sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ) may promote both general corrosion and pitting corrosion. The pitting corrosion susceptibility in SS in chlorinated H 2 SO 4 and the effect of Euphorbia echinus extract (EEE) on both general corrosion and pitting corrosion have been studied using potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, chronoamperometry, cyclic voltammetry, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The pitting potential has been found to shift slightly in the presence of chloride ions (Cl − ) in H 2 SO 4 . Also, pitting corrosion initiation has been demonstrated in the recorded chronoamperograms as a linear straight line having a positive slope. EEE has reduced the general corrosion and the inhibitor adsorption was found to follow the Langmuir isotherm. SEM micrographs showed that the tested inhibitor has efficiently acted on pitting corrosion for different concentrations of Cl − . Also, the kinetic findings were in good agreement with the surface analysis data. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrophotometric measurements provided more insights on the interaction between the chemical functional groups of the inhibitor and the SS surface.

To study the rules of interference and protective measures on buried pipelines of high-voltage direct current (HVDC), the influence of different factors, including current into soil, soil resistance, damaged rate of coatings, and electrode-to-pipe distance, on pipe-to-soil potential deviation were simulated. Based on the simulated results, the fitted equations and interference judgment pattern were also obtained. The protective measures of insulation and cathodic protection can be performed for buried pipelines to prevent the interference, but the cathodic protection in the isolated area may become the stray current source of the other pipe section. This study can provide suggestions for the evaluation of interference and protective measures of pipelines of HVDC.
