Recent advances in piezospectroscopy

Abstract
Strain produces small but systematic changes in the Raman and luminescence spectra of solids. Piezospectroscopy is a technique that exploits these changes for determining stresses, usually from shifts in a characteristic spectral line. In this review in honor of Wolfgang Pompe, recent advances in piezospectroscopy applied to the determination of stresses in alumina materials are described.
