Codes, heterogeneities, and structures: Visual information and visual art

Georgij Yu. Somov (b. 1946) is a professor at the Urban Design Institute in Moscow 〈georgij.somov@gmail.com〉. His research interests include the problems of design, composition in architecture, semiotics of visual art, and theoretical semiotics. His publications include “Connotations in semiotic systems of visual art (by the example of works by M. A. Vrubel)” (2006); “Semiotic systemity of visual artworks: Case study ofThe Holy Trinity by Rublev” (2007); “Organizing connotations in works of visual art (through the example of works by Giovanni Bellini)” (2010); and “Concepts and senses in visual art: Through the example of analysis of some works by Bruegel the Elder” (2010).
Abstract
Codes are mechanisms in which signs are actualized. They relate various sign sides to each other. These sign sides can be represented as heterogeneities (diversity, relations, differences), some are organized with the help of various differences – identities formulated in a specific way. The basis of the codes of visual perception and art are primarily the heterogeneities of the elements perceived directly (contours of objects, sizes, directions of movement, light and color irritants, etc.). A structure, conceived of as a manner of connection, is a principle for constructing a kind of a whole and is the center of an organized heterogeneity.
