Abstract
C10H12Br4N2, orthorhombic, Pbcn (no. 60), a = 13.3150(2) Å, b = 13.8478(2) Å, c = 15.7803(2) Å, V = 2909.63(7) Å3, Z = 8, Rgt(F) = 0.0302, wRref(F2) = 0.0948, T = 220 K.
The molecular structure is shown in the figure. Table 1 contains crystallographic data and Table 2 contains the list of the atoms including atomic coordinates and displacement parameters.

1 Source of material
Add 5 g of monopyridin-1-ium tribromide and 30 g of methanol to the reactor. The temperature of the reactor was raised to 323 K. The insoluble impurities were removed by hot filtration, and the red filtrate was retained. The red filtrate then was poured into an evaporating dish and slowly evaporated at room temperature to obtain red needle-like crystals.
2 Experimental details
Hydrogen atoms were placed in their geometrically idealized positions and constrained to ride on their parent atoms.
3 Discussion
The bromination reaction is a class of very important reactions in organic chemistry, mainly used to introduce bromine atoms into organic molecules. Compared to other brom agents, pyridinium tribromide has the advantages of high selectivity, mild reaction conditions, and ease of measurement. 5 The title compound is obtained by dissoving pyridinium tribromide in methanol at 323 K and then allowing it to naturally evaporate at room temperature.
The crystal structure of the title compound was analyzed and refined by SHELX program. 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 The repeating units of the title compound are two pyridin-1-ium cations, one tribromide and a bromide ion. The bond lengths and angles are in the expected ranges. We did not add pyridine hydrobromide during the crystallization process, but the substance appeared in the final characterization. The pyridinium-1-ium tribromide released a molecule of bromine gas, which was converted into pyridinium hydrobromid in the repeating unit, the two pyridinium cations are parallel to each other and are mirror images of each other, with the tribromide ion (Br(1), Br(2), Br(3)) and bromide anion (Br(4)) located on either side of the pyridinium cations. These pyridinium cations and bromide anions are attracted to each other by ionic bonds. Under the attraction of ionic bonds, the bond angle of the tribromide anion is 177.65°, which is less than 180°. 6 , 7 , 8 The distance between the pyridinium cation and the bromide anion is 2.44 Å, and they are also attracted to each other via ionic bonds. 9 , 10
