Abstract
This article presents the results of a research whose goal was to verify the use of school Portuguese-Spanish bilingual dictionaries, used as a support in the building up of texts written in Spanish by Brazilian students of that language. The research procedure adopted was the “verbal protocol” because it allows for the registry of all actions reported by the participants during the time the task is being carried out. On the one hand, the intention was to prove to what extent the research participants used the dictionaries available to them as supporting tools in the process of written production, since, theoretically, the dictionaries could help them with their doubts regarding lexicon, semantics, grammar, and spelling.
On the other hand, there was also the intention to evaluate the quality of the information offered in those dictionaries. In most cases, it was verified that the information presented in the dictionaries consulted did not privilege the needs common to users of the Brazilian variant of Portuguese as their native language, since they did not contrast one language against the other. It is thought that the making of school bilingual dictionaries must use the contrastive principle as a starting point so that the dictionaries may really meet the potential needs of their users. The importance and usefulness of bilingual dictionaries are known as supporting tools in the tasks of text production, since such dictionaries take into consideration the existing differences among the languages involved in them.
