Since their development in the mid-1990s, the principles of green chemistry and green engineering have provided a framework for a growing body of research and practice dedicated to the design of sustainable chemicals and processes. Award-winning innovations generated by this research have been adopted by industry and praised for delivering cost-savings, risk-reduction, and positive environmental impact. Academia has also begun to introduce green chemistry and engineering principles into chemistry education. Today, through the lens of green chemistry and engineering, scientists are redesigning chemical syntheses and processes to enable a sustainable future for us all.
The Green Chemistry and Engineering (GC&E) Conference has been a leading platform for promoting and advancing research and collaboration in green chemistry and engineering since 1997. Now in its 17th year, the conference will be held in the United States just outside of Washington DC in North Bethesda, Maryland, from Tuesday, June 18 to Thursday, June 20, 2013. The conference organizing committee includes Dr. Matthew J. Realff, Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Georgia Tech, and Roger McFadden, VP and Senior Scientist at Staples, Inc.
Sustainability for the 21st century
The theme of this year’s conference is “Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering in the 21st Century”. Presenters at the conference will discuss the rapidly developing body of sustainable and green chemistry and engineering research and its role in addressing humanity’s greatest challenges. Sessions will cover toxicology, materials science, sustainable manufacturing, life cycle analysis, bio-based materials, assessment and metrics, among others. Emphasis will also be given to the interrelated areas of policy, education, communication, collaboration, and business. The program includes over 25 technical sessions and three poster sessions, covering a range of important topics.
Keynotes
During the 3-day conference, there will be daily keynotes speakers. We will hear from Dr. Milton Hearn, Associate Director of the Green Chemical Futures-Industry in Melbourne, Australia; Dr. James Hutchinson, Professor of Chemistry, University of Oregon; and Dr. Volker Schaedler, VP of Innovation & Technology North America, BASF Corporation.
Career and business building
Career-building begins with networking, and the scope, scale, and pace of GC&E allows for ample opportunity to build relationships and connect with colleagues. Networking breaks are built into the schedule. A career workshop will be offered during the conference to provide attendees with professional development advice, and a special session for green chemistry entrepreneurs will guide business plan development. A Green Expo provides a central hub of activity with a variety of vendors and services in the field.
The ACS Green Chemistry Institute® invites global chemists, engineers, researchers and students, policy analysts, managers and directors, venture capitalists, and anyone who is interested in green chemistry and engineering to attend the conference.
