Abstract
The relationship between language studies and cultural studies to one another is of a highly problematic character – if there is any such interrelationship at all. At first sight, such a situation may appear strange but a closer look reveals that there are deeply rooted reasons for this reciprocal indifference, reasons that are quite complex in nature. The paper has the intention to clarify some of them, in the hope that it may contribute to a more complex and, thus, a more adequate theoretical framework from which insight into language and insight into culture might ensue.
