Der neue Mensch als Durchschnittling

Abstract
After the catastrophic experiences of the First World War had exposed the hope for a ›new man‹ as utopian, Robert Musil reflected on the relationship between the individual and urban mass society. In contrast to contemporary critical thought on culture, science, and modernity, he found inspiration for his experimental conception of a new kind of intellectual in mathematics and the still-young social sciences. This article examines the resultant ambivalent literary form in three constellations of characters, all of which revolve around the question of the applicability of exact methods and statistical models to the lifeworld.
