Abstract

The theatrical landscape of Vienna can be described historically, in the terminology of Pierre Bourdieu, as a cultural ›field‹ of social strata and as a playground for competition over economic and cultural capital. When Musil started to write theatre reviews in the early 1920s, he was in fact an outsider where established Viennese theatre was concerned, which gave him a sharp perspective on its oddities. Often satirically, Musil describes actors and players (in the double sense), positions and interests in the ›field‹, mainly taking apart its specific illusio – the myth of Vienna as the best and most famous theatrical city in the German-speaking world.
