The gods of Municipium “S”
-
Olga Pelcer-Vujačić
Abstract
In the Municipium Splonistarum, long known as Municipium S, out of approximately 100 inscriptions, only 15 are votive, half dedicated to Jupiter, the supreme Roman deity. Silvanus is the only other deity with multiple dedications; the rest are single finds. The mountainous Dalmatian terrain inhibited the spread of cults, restricting interaction and promoting insular religious practices, which limited diversity. Settlements such as Komini (Pljevlja) and Kolovrat (Prijepolje) show a trend of nature-based worship. Ongoing research is exploring the assimilation of pre-Roman beliefs into Roman culture in the region, shedding light on the interplay between indigenous traditions and Roman influence.
