Abstract

This paper presents three new milestones from Scupi (Colonia Flavia Scupinorum) that were excavated in 2008 in the area of the city’s southeast necropolis. The fragmented milestones were discovered near the city’s south-eastern defensive wall, south of the main Roman road from Stobi that leads to Scupi from the east and joins the city decumanus maximus directly. All three were erected in the third century, during the rule of the emperors Elagabalus? (or Severus Alexander?), Traianus Decius and the joined rule of Valerianus I with Gallienus. In addition to the detailed epigraphic analysis of the inscriptions, special attention will be given to the archaeological context of the findings and the historical and political circumstances in the Balkans during the third century.
