Marble mensae from Sirmium as a mediterranean tradition accepted by the early Christians
-
Ivana Popović
Abstract
Most of the attested mensae originate from the Mediterranean coast and the islands. Remains of such tables in the Balkan hinterland and the South of Pannonia concentrate in Sirmium and few nearby sites. Several bases for the mensae were recorded in the tombs in Sopianae. The contribution presents the marble bases of Sirmium and discusses Mediterranean cultural influences, the ways of their distribution as well as the Christian origin of some of these monuments.
