Abstract

Theological contributions to applied ethics hardly ever refer to Christology. I argue that inquiry into the role of Christology in Ethics is identical with the question for the theological dimension of ethics in general and explore two different strategies of dealing with this: (1.) the universalisation of religiosity (or spirituality) and (2.) understanding theological ethics as a mere reflection on the morality of the Christian community. I argue that both approaches are insufficient due to Christological reasons. Christology thereby is introduced as a metaethical category. By reference to Zwingli’s interpretation of divine and human justice I explore further how Christian morality is caught up in the tension between the moral ideal of a renewed humanity in Christ and the necessity to formulate moral duties for living in a world in which this ideal can never be realized. I therefore argue that, from the perspective of a Christologically reflected theological ethics, every deontological ethics is only a fallback position (Wolterstorff) we need because the true moral good cannot be realized.
