Abstract

How can Patristic Christology serve contemporary theological reflection? This essay addresses this question by reflecting on three approaches that have been popular in recent scholarship: so-called conciliar Christology as conducted within the framework of analytic theology; the more hermeneutic approach through the history of doctrine; and the radical critique of Patristic dogma by theologians such as John Hick and Don Cupitt. It is argued that modern theologians need to understand Patristic ideas in their historical context but also take them seriously as intellectual attempts to answer the question who Jesus was.
