Christology Revised

Abstract

Christology has developed since antiquity around the paradigm of the incarnation. The incarnation of God in Jesus Christ is the core problem to be understood. This is not only underscored by the dogma of Chalcedon, but also recognized by the critical revisions of the dogmatic tradition in modern times, from the various versions of the quest for the historical Jesus to the debates over Jesus and Israel to the contemporary outlines of kenotic theology. In contrast, this paper emphasizes that Christianity began with Easter, not Christmas. The emphasis is not on the presence of God in Jesus, but on what God does through Christ for the redemption of humanity. A Christology that is not thoroughly soteriological does not fulfil its task. Christology should therefore no longer focus on the paradigm of incarnation, but on that of resurrection. Incarnation is not to be understood as God becoming human, but as humans becoming humane through God.
