Abstract

More than any other text, the Gospel of John has contributed to the shape of Ancient Christian Christology. For contemporary theological reflection, however, it appears problematic in its high Christology, its unhistorical portrayal of Jesus, its exclusive theology of revelation, and its anti-Jewish features. The article identifies the problems and mentions the often unconvincing exegetical attempts to ‚save‘ this gospel from criticism. After some brief remarks on the historical framework, the article describes the basic tension between the Johannine high Christology and the paradoxical conception of the incarnation. Then, the author freshly reconstructs the making of Johannine Christology from its Jewish background and its synoptic presuppositions. Special attention is paid to the appropriate logic of the reading, from eschatology to protology or from the end to the beginning. Finally, the article phrases some theological theses on the content and the theological claim to validity of Johannine Christology.
