Zum Newton-Komplex: Göttliche Weltökonomie oder Selbstbehauptung des Menschen?

Abstract
The Newton complex: divine world economy or human self-assertion? My contribution attempts to place the approach of Dieter Groh’s unfinished trilogy on the Newton complex in a broader framework of the philosophy and history of science. To this end, I first sketch the contextualisation of the genesis of modern science in the history of ideas that Groh strives for. Then, I elaborate his central theses concerning the Newton complex. Next, I compare his approach of the symbolic fields of natura lapsa and oeconomia mundi with central metaphors that have created opposing world views over the centuries, as well as with themata in the sense of Gerald Holton. Holton’s conception of themata also sheds light on the way in which Groh’s Newton complex differs from Hans Blumenberg’s interpretation of the genesis of modern science and technology in terms of the history of ideas: they are complementary themata regarding the genesis of modern science and technology.
