Abstract
Cultural historians have already repeatedly pointed out the important function of baths in the Middle Ages and early modern period. This can be documented in increasing numbers from the late 12th and early 13th centuries onwards, particularly through literary and visual sources. From the outset, the bath not only had purifying functions, but also proved to be a place of health, pleasure and also a retreat for fairies or the magical per se. The literary-historical analysis is confirmed by the latest historical studies on urban legislation relating to public hygiene from the 13th and 14th centuries onwards. Art-historical documents validate the fictional statements, opening up a new chapter on everyday culture.
