Bade- und Kurmusik
Ein Kapitel aus dem Buch Bade- und Kurmusik

Abstract

In the 16th and 17th century, the Pfeffersbad was not only characterised by its geographical location with the impressive Tamina canyon and the mineral-rich springs, but also as a sound, healing and sacred space. The sound of nature and water, which are amplified by the acoustic conditions of the rock formations, are perceived as stimulating and terrifying at the same time. This serves as a inducement to compare these sounds with music or to react to these sounds through music. In the healing space, the focus is on the dietary preservation or restoration of health. The music serves not only as entertainment for the bathers, but also as a positive stimulus for emotional movements. In the divine worship, the Pfeffersbad also reveals itself as a sacred space: the praise of God for the thermal springs and the healing process in the spa is integrated into the daily routine of the bathers and is expressed in inner devotion and musical expression. However, the confessional tensions are also evident in the Catholic-dominated Pfeffersbad. The ban on singing German psalms led to complaints from Protestant bathers and showed how the Pfeffersbad reflected early modern society as a microcosm.
