12 Green Management Practices by Small and Medium Enterprises

Abstract

As ‘Greening’ the process has become norm of the day, total quality management in manufacturing sector becomes a reality only with green practices. Having green practices in place, creating awareness among the employees and adhering to the mandate on green practices sustainable practices, does have a huge impact on performance of the entities. This chapter attempts to bring together, the components of green management practices, from existing literature and contemporary practices. Green management practices enable continuous improvement and sustainability. Green Manufacturing is the most emerging sustainable manufacturing practice that has the capability to solve the most of issues that the Indian industries come across now. It covers all aspect to reduce the environmental impact by optimum use of available resources and reduction of waste. Due to various reasons, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) may have been left out of the regulatory and social pressures. The time has come where ignoring environmental impacts of SMEs is no longer viable. Small and medium sized firms are essential to all economies but also have a significant negative impact on the environment. Their collective footprint equates to the major contribution of industrial pollution, yet SMEs are not convinced of the necessity for behaviour change. It is imperative to understand the importance of becoming green, and act swiftly.
