15 Film, Music, Books, Etc.: Artifacts of Cultural Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Abstract

The chapter adopts a recombination approach to examine innovation in cultural production, adapting a concept used in research on technological inventions. Drawing on this approach, innovation is viewed as a process involving producers searching for new creative content, and audiences engaging to understand it. The process can be coordinated by individuals and/or organizations and is displayed in products such as films, books, and video games. Using a combinatorial approach to innovation in cultural production implies identifying the use of new features and new combinations of existing features in products. The chapter discusses key factors that contribute to innovation in cultural products at a macro, meso, and micro level. It also examines some corresponding macro, meso, and micro factors associated with how audiences understand cultural products as offering something different/novel.
