26 The Cultural Environment for Innovation and Entrepreneurship
-
Omar Lizardo
and Anthony Shu
Abstract
This chapter reviews the literature on the relationship between culture and entrepreneurship, focusing on how ‘culture’ has been conceptualized in this literature. It finds that most of the literature in this area relies on an outdated conception of culture focused on ‘shared values.’ It is argued that this conception of culture is not only empirically inaccurate but also theoretically limiting. In its place, it is proposed that a disaggregated, multilevel, and heterogeneous conception of culture be adopted. Such a conception allows for a more nuanced understanding of the complex ways in which culture can influence entrepreneurship. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the implications of this shift for future research on culture and entrepreneurship.
