Abstract

This chapter argues that the importance of Hegel’s notion of “inorganic nature” is threefold: (1) historical, as it anticipates Uexküll’s concept of Umwelt; (2) ethical, as it implies the attribution of subjectivity to non-human animals; and (3) exegetical, as it provides the possibility of a (qualified) naturalistic reading of Hegel.
