13 Medical textiles: materials, applications, features, and recent advancements

Abstract
The textile industry is one of the largest industries in the world that provides the basic need of every individual. Apart from clothing, the application areas of textiles are widespread under the aegis of technical textiles. Out of several industrial applications, the use of textiles in the medical field has significant importance. In this view, this chapter aims in consolidating the fundamentals and latest advancements in medical textiles. The first part of the chapter discusses the essentials of medical textiles with various application areas and their requirements. In this section, the general classifications of medical textiles, fibres used, fabric structures preferred, and special requirements of those materials have been elaborated. The second part of the chapter details the recent advancement in the textiles that are used in medical applications, namely smart medical textiles, wound dressing, compression garments, and special applications like sutures.
