3 Coating- and lamination-based smart textiles: techniques, features, and challenges
-
Lelona Pradhan
Abstract
The application of textile materials is multidimensional. Among the applications, textile materials that have smart properties, enabling them to sense and respond to environmental stimuli, such as chemical, biological, thermal, magnetic, and mechanical stimuli, have attracted huge attention. These smart materials are created by specially functionalizing textile materials. Coating and lamination have always been good tools for imparting functionalization on textile substrates. Application of different polymers and chemicals using various techniques of coating and lamination, chemical vapour deposition, layer-by-layer assembly, surface functionalization, and so on are some of the well-known processes for preparing these smart textile materials. This chapter discusses the various aspects of coating- and lamination-based smart textiles, their preparation techniques, properties, and their advantages and limitations.
