Abstract

Research on social media use in and around organizations and organizing practices has expanded rapidly. These information and communication technologies make communication visible beyond an interpersonal context. Unlike mass media’s ability to primarily communicate in a one-person-to-many-people form, social media allow both one-to-many and peer-to-peer communication. This chapter provides clarifying definitions and situates social media within an organizational communication context. It describes how enterprise social media (ESM) can be viewed through affordancebased frameworks, why people use social media in and around their organizations, and the outcomes associated with using ESM. We also discuss the growing research on people using their personal social media accounts for work use. The chapter discusses concerns like privacy that affect people in their organizational and personal lives. Finally, we explore examples of organizing processes through social media use and suggest this area is ripe for organizational communication research. As social media evolve and organizations continue expanding their reliance on technologies that use and handle big data, understanding social media is of growing importance. Readers will walk away better understanding the literature on organizational and organizing use of social media and have clear ideas for research opportunities.
